Ember of Vael
★★★★★ 4.6
Ember of Vael asks for your patience early on, but it rewards it. You play a wandering courier who stumbles into a kingdom-sized mess, and the turn-based battles start simple before opening up into genuinely tricky party management.
The writing carries it. Side characters have their own motives and they argue with you, which keeps the long dialogue stretches from feeling like homework. Combat lets you swap party members mid-fight, and planning those swaps became our favorite part.
Progression is generous without feeling automatic. We spent a good fifteen hours and still had regions left to explore. If you want something to sink into on a train ride, this is a strong pick.
What we liked
- Characters you actually care about
- Flexible turn-based combat
